The Vixen War Bride book 5. Umm. Despite the title, despite the series name, despite the cover -- this is military SF. Not about a war, but the post-war occupation.
Spoilers for the earlier books ahead. (It seriously builds.)
And, indeed, it grows more serious. The Va'Shen sent to their village had dealt with considerably more unscrupulous Occupation forces. It involves a bakery that is not a bakery, an apparent attack with a glasser, a Huntress's hair being cut by force, and more.
They finally hit when a Va'Shen mentions history and the Dark Ones where a human can hear it. Trouble unsurprisingly ensues, since Patricia, the human, says they could not travel between stars four thousand years ago.
