Yeah, Faust part ii has a lot of context-dependant stuff where you really need an annotated edition to get all of it (& not just the Greek stuff but European politics + economics and even Goethe's weird theories on color and geology). He really made everyone wait years for the sequel and then just stuffed it full of all his weird hobbies...
