Things in the Basement
Things in the Basement by Ben Hatke
A quite compulsive read. I read it all in the bookstore parking lot because I had started to read in the store.
Milo's mother is looking after the infant twins, and sends him into the basement to find one of Lucy's socks, missing, though it's the special one. He's quite frightened, but when his mother assures the twins he find the sock, he returns to his quest.
It involves more socks than Lucy's, paintings, questions of friendship and aid, mushroom people, investigating gold, and more.
