Down the Long Hills
Down the Long Hills by Louis L'Amour
A drama of the West.
Young Hardy is being brought west to his father, in a wagon company. In the morning, he realizes that his stallion had gotten loose, and he goes after, and finds the three-year-old Betsy Sue followed him.
He finds the horse. He also sees smoke rising from the wagons in a way that reveals that he and Betsy Sue were the only ones to avoid the raiding party. He has to keep them alive and find their way to safety.
Later, his father hears word from a traveler of the attack -- and how thee were no children's bodies left. He sets out with friends.
It's late and on the verge of winter. There are bears and wolves and men who can't be trusted. And problems with grub. And more.
