Adventures in space!
Our heroine, Natalya, is at her graduation party when a man falls down dead before her, and a teacher points out how it looks, especially since he was an undercover agent. She -- and her roommate Zoya, guilt by association -- flee on her ship.
On the way out of the system, Natalya points out how it was set up, and winkles out of Zoya that they inducted her as an agent. They still flee to Toe-Hold space, outside the reach of the law, where Natalya had grown up.
It involves tales of her father, getting maps of space, an extortionate price, a drunk who's not drunk, a lot of junk, saving to permanent memory, and more.
