After a flashback to Athos's last meeting with his brother Ozymandias, the tale returns to Athos's quest to track down the pirates, which predominates in this volume. We have intrigue, lies, and battles.
Other threads advance, with Flint's becoming friends with Sir Orgulus, and later learning more of the Empire's lies; Lirazel and a dead world; Napoleon's attempts to issue a report meeting difficulties. This includes the problems with talking with Horses, Ducks and their eggs, a world where it is seldom night, discussions of the Empress, and more.
