Rec-cember Day 15: Firefly

A quick one, because tonight I'm shattered. In the unlikely event someone isn't familiar with the show or the movie, Fanlore has a good rundown.

My main ship back then was Mal/River (now that I'm older I'm slightly squicked by the age difference though River is so much more powerful that Mal that this redresses the balance a little), so my recs reflect this. Also, Firefly seems to be the little black dress of crossovers, as it goes well with any fandom. I remember reading loads of very fun crossovers, unfortunately I had only a handful saved in my bookmarks.

No Power In the 'Verse by [archiveofourown.org profile] vialethe. 24K words. Mal/River. Having no choice but to feel, River cherishes all the more deeply the ability to act. If only she knew what action to take." A believable and gorgeously written take on this unlikely pairing. Very good River voice, which must be a bitch to get right.

I Fall by [ao3.mal profile] Kass/River. River knows what she wants. Probably the first story that made me fall for this pairing. It's adorable how persistent River has to be and how flustered Mal is.

Whisky and Wet by [archiveofourown.org profile] musesfool Mal/River. There's a difference between what a man wants and what he knows is right. Exquisite yearning, lovely character voices.

Good Luck Charms by [archiveofourown.org profile] Nary. Pre-series Wash/Zoe. Lovely backstory for one of the best married couples in TV.

And Then It Went all F*ing Stargate by **indyhat. Firefly/Generation Kill. Gen. Spot-on character voices. Hilarious.

The Pitt

never waste a Friday night by [archiveofourown.org profile] morphosynctactic. Trinity/Whitaker. Don't hit the back button! I know this have siblings vibes. Yet this works. It's tremendously in character. And hot. And sweet. And hilarious. You would think that sleeping with Trinity Santos (who isn't actually that into him) would rip Dennis' self-esteem to shreds. But it turns out that when she texts him "i thought your dick was going to be kind of weird but it’s pretty solid” and "your fingerblasting is adequate" he knows that's the truth and nothing but the truth.

Hidden dimensions could explain where mass comes from

A new theory proposes that the universe’s fundamental forces and particle properties may arise from the geometry of hidden extra dimensions. These dimensions could twist and evolve over time, forming stable structures that generate mass and symmetry breaking on their own. The approach may even explain cosmic expansion and predict a new particle. It hints at a universe built entirely from geometry.

Watched the weather report today.

Today's temperatures: Started below 20, "feels like" in the single digits. But not to worry, within a week we should be in the 50s!

And they just said that, with no commentary, like it's not absolutely bizarre to go from 19F - 56F within a single week in December.

And it's not just the high temperatures that are bizarre, the low ones are too. I can't speak to the decades before 1990, I guess, but NYC weather used to be temperate - we got more snow, but that's because the winter temperatures were in the snow range - close to the freezing point, not so warm it melted, not so cold that it just didn't happen.

Tired today, as expected

Yesterday was travel day. I had an entirely uneventful journey to Heathrow and an equally uneventful flight to Helsinki. I was due to have just under two hours between flights but when I checked the monitors after border control I realised it was going to be more—pretty much everything still due to depart that evening was delayed. The estimate for my flight was 40 minutes initially, which got updated with another 25 minutes later on, presumably when it became clear when the aircraft was arriving from its previous journey. That was more or less what happened and we eventually landed close to an hour later than scheduled.

It was always going to be a short night and I was very tired when my alarm went off this morning. But getting up, having breakfast and unpacking helped get me going- And I was determined to go for a short walk at lunchtime to get some fresh air and hopefully clear my head a little, and that helped too to last through the working day.

In the evening, mum and I met my aunt to go to a Christmas concert with a string quartet and a tenor, and it was wonderful. But very tired now.

Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and cold, but less frigid than yesterday.  It got down to 8 below last night.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.  I put out a new block of peanut suet.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 12/15/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a female cardinal.

EDIT 12/15/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 12/15/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen a male cardinal.

None more black.

YOU DIRTY BIRD!

Give me a big bag of that effin' pig feed and ten pounds of that bitchly cow corn.

You gotta ask me nicely.

The Endie Awards 2025 - TTRPG I have enjoyed & New Year Resolution

Recently I finally have time to delve into my massive backlog of solo ttrpg from the various huge itch.io bundles I bought.

Superhero DIY Award:

See Issue X
is a solo superhero RPG that emulate superhero comics. It uses playing cards to help generate characters and plot prompts. The mechanic is kind of complicated - I was confused how to deal with discarded cards at first. However, it provides a clear act structure and freedom for you to decide what prompts to use/ignore. I have generated my environmentalist Aquawoman superheroine who fights to protect the ocean and enjoyed the twists.

One More Tea Award

Last Tea Shop Complete is a solo RPG that you run a tea shop on the border of the living and the dead. The recently deceased visit for one last hot drink before their long journey into the Great Beyond. It's very reflective and meditative. It's fun to generate the vistors, and decide what tea to serve them (with different story effects).

Small Is Beautiful Award

One Day at a Thyme is a cozy solo journaling game in which you play the inhabitant of a cottage in a magical world. It's short and very relaxing to play.

Genre Savvy Award

Reincarnated as the Unlovable Villainess?! is a solo RPG that you are isekaied as the doomed villain protagonist in an otome game. I really like it. It's short but has a good balance of strategy elements (to survive to the end) and journalling elements. It's both a love letter to the genre and an enjoyable game.

New Year Resolution

I have just bought For Small Creatures Such As We, a 256 page solo ttrpg about a space ship captain and their alien crews. It's more structured and detailed than the above titles, but I hope I can start a game soon.

Mainly reviews and nattering on about television shows...

1. Still doing the Buffy/Angel rewatch. Watched Episodes 4, 5, and 6 of Angel S2, and episodes 5, 6, and 7 of Buffy S5.

Takeaways?

Whomever designed Joyce's bedroom has no sense of design. Also it appears to be stuck in the 1970s? It's the worst set in the show, which is saying something, since we have Tara's entirely black bedroom. Joyce's entirely red bedroom vs. Tara's black one, decisions decisions.

Angel/Darla sequence in the Convent Basement in Dear Boy (Episode 5) is similar to Buffy/Spike sequence in the alley behind the Bronze in Fool for Love (Episode 7). Read more... )

Another thing I didn't previously pick up on? In Fool For Love - Spike's interaction with each slayer he is trying to kill - involves mothers, not sure the extent to which he's aware of it, though. Read more... )

Spike does actually provide some insightful information to Buffy and the audience, not necessarily intentionally - and from his perspective, it's relatively obvious. He doesn't appear to understand why Buffy and her friends don't get it. Read more... )

What doesn't quite work in the episode is Riley and her friends. It's also clear from the episode why the writers intend to write out Riley and how. Read more... )

2. Watched the 1968 film Rachel, Rachel yesterday on Apple + for $2.99. I rented it. It starred Joanne Woodward, Estelle Parsons, and Jim Olsen and was directed by Paul Newman. Read more... )

3. Finished Down Cemetery Road - the series by Mike Heron based on his book of the same name, on Apple +. Apple + has an annoying interface, that is similar to HBO's, in that it is hard to select episodes to watch on it. It automatically kicks you to the next one or makes you rewatch the one you just saw. Also, I can't always tell how many episodes there are, or if I've seen the last one. I looked it up - it only has eight episodes, the last one aired this week, on December 10.

4. Re-started S2 of The Morning Show on Apple + - it's okay. Doesn't really start to take off until Episode 3, Read more... )

Other than that, and doing knee exercises, and icing my knee, and figuring out how to use my new cooking appliance (the NOSH steam/air fryer/bake/toaster oven) - I've not done much. I have tried out a few more video puzzle games - Royal Match (which starts simple then gets hard and feels rigged for money), various attempts at Mahjong games that don't have ads (they seem to acquire them after a certain point) and I have to delete the game entirely because the pop up ads freeze the phone. There's a nasty AI cleaner ad that really froze the phone and had me worried, but once I deleted the game - it went away.

Did manage to cook a biscuit (American version not the British - think small scone), and crisp some gluten free french bread in the oven.

It's easier to use than expected and meets my needs. Also smaller than expected and doesn't take up as much space as I feared. This may work. I'd been holding off getting one due to the spacing issue. But it doesn't appear to be a problem.

A little lonely this Xmas. Be happy when it's over. Mother is a little lonely too. Crazy Org is the reason I'm not spending it with Mother, which is annoying me to no end. (I'll save you the gory details.)

Oh, well, I have nice lights up, the lobby is well decorated, there's some snow on the ground, and presents wrapped in Amazon gift bags under the tree. I'd say I miss the other wrapping, but this is actually easier to recycle.

Scientists Thought Parkinson’s Was in Our Genes. It Might Be in the Water

New ideas about chronic illness could revolutionize treatment, if we take the research seriously.

All told, more than half of Parkinson’s research dollars in the past two decades have flowed toward genetics.
But Parkinson’s rates in the US have doubled in the past 30 years. And studies suggest they will climb another 15 to 35 percent in each coming decade. This is not how an inherited genetic disease is supposed to behave.
Despite the avalanche of funding, the latest research suggests that only 10 to 15 percent of Parkinson’s cases can be fully explained by genetics. The other three-quarters are, functionally, a mystery.
[---8<---]
Parkinson’s, it appeared, could be caused by a chemical.

Short TV show review: Andor

I really enjoyed watching Andor, overall. I did think there were a few places where the pacing dragged a bit and it wasn't as mindblowingly great as the hype made it sound like it would be, but it was still very good! The bits on Ghorman were kind of annoying because the Ghor language sounds so much like French but isn't French, I felt like I was taking crazy pills hahaha. Favourite episode was either the prison break or the Kleya flashbacks episode. I agressively Did Not Care about Syril or his mother, but every other character was at least interesting. I love Cassian, Vel and Cinta, but I think Kleya might be my favourite. I want to rewatch Rogue One, now.

Rec-cember Day 13 : Suits

This is not a fandom I was much obsessed with. The tv show was all right, in its early seasons at least, eminently watchable. Not something I've ever wished to revisit. However I remember enjoying some of the fic back in the day.

Only one has withstood the test of time. needs must by [archiveofourown.org profile] thatotherperv. 98K Harvey/Mike. Extremely explicit. When Grammy needs an upgrade in care, Mike knows that the usual one-off gig as a paid submissive won't be enough. He takes a job he's been refusing for a while - a long-term, full-time contract. He expects his client to be a sadistic asshole. He expects not to like it. He's wrong on both counts. It's an AU where Mike is a prostitute. Dom/sub. Now, BDSM is totally not my cup of tea, but this fic does such a great job of explaining this dynamic that I could totally see the appeal. Also, everything is perfectly in character. And there's lots of plot (the first two seasons are basically re-written, IIRC). And emotional growth. Plus, it comes in podfic form too, read by the crazily-talented [archiveofourown.org profile] dodificus. I lost count of how many times I listened to this story and every damn time it grabs me by the throat and never lets me go for the whole 11 hours of it.

I quite like Donna/Harvey as a pairing, unfortunately it was never very popular in the fandom. I remember being so happy when I found this little gem: Happy To See Me by [archiveofourown.org profile] Zinnith (I originally had bookmarked on LJ, just to give you an idea of how old some of my fic recs are; it was easy enough to track down in the Ao3 too, though). Great character voices and lovely, lyrical prose.

The Pitt

One of the aspects that made the previous Dom/sub story work for me was how explicit and detailed the kink negotiation was. That reminded me of an excellent fic that hinges on that very concept in this fandom: Red Light, Green Light by [archiveofourown.org profile] avocadomoon. Now, it's avocadomoon, the BNF author for Kingdon, so I don't think I have to say more. Her fic are consistently the ones with the highest number of hits on the Ao3 for a reason. Anyway, for my DW friends who are not into the Pitt, this story features Mel and Langdon becoming friends-with-benefits. I'm making this sound boring. It's so much fun. I always giggle when I re-read certain parts.
