I found that Ancillary Justice jumped into some slow backstory on the second chapter, which I got through mostly because I am a sucker for distributed-system AI stuff. The backstory is totally necessary, but it did have some pages where it was much slower than the prior section.
So if you bounced from it initially, that may've been why! But now that you know the universe is a good one, hopefully you can skim through anything that feels slow and flip back to get the necessary bits of emotional detail from it.
