Book Review
Title: Dirty Little Secrets
Author: CJ Omololu
Available: paperback and electronically
If you've seen and been fascinated by the TV show Hoarders you will love Dirty Little Secrets.
Lucy is the youngest of three and has no memory of living in a home that was not filled with things. She knows the rules: don't let outsiders in; don't move her mother's things; don't throw anything away; don't tell anyone about her home. Lucy manages to do all three except the last and when she finds her mother dead under a pile of rubbish after spending the night at a friend's, she is determined that no one will discover her family's secret.
There is very little more I can say about this book without giving away spoilers. It is a very quick, engaging read. Lucy is trapped in a situation she cannot find a way out of. I dislike almost every adult person in this book. I feel a bit of sympathy for her two older siblings who can relate to what Lucy is experiencing but offer her no assistance whatsoever. But every other adult in her life has let her down.
But Lucy is only afraid of not keeping her secret. She is terrifyingly brave. She doesn't hesitate to come up a with a plan and sets right to work on it. It is such a heartbreaking read and such a wonderful novel. I cannot recommend it enough.
