Twig has fallen into the role of Placeling, because his father died without an apprentice, and he knew the most about it -- little though that was. It is his job to take magical things and put them where they will be found by the appropriate Chosen One, who will save the world. More complications than he expected arise in a brightly colored and quite fantastical setting.
