The opening of a series.
Miyo goes to the household of Kiyoka Kundo, who is rich and powerful and possesses a strong (magical) Gift. And whose proposed brides never last long.
He's cold because he assumes she's the typical young noblewoman he's been offered.
But Miyo is the stepdaughter, and what's more the daughter of the arranged match that forced her father to break off from his beloved, only to marry her once his first wife died. What's more, the stepmother had a daughter with the family's Gift, where Miyo doesn't, though the marriage had been arranged exactly for that. She's beaten down by abuse, but knows she can't return.
Misunderstandings make this worse, but she wins over his faithful housekeeper, and he pieces together clues, and a shopping trip rounds out the volume. Also, the background is filled in.
