To Tame a Land
To Tame a Land by Louis L'Amour
You can do a lot of things in Westerns. This one is a bildungsroman.
The narrator is going west with his father, his mother having died, when they lose a wheel on the wagon, and the wagon train captain insists on the rest going on for their own safety. (They were both sweet on the same woman.)
The father dies, but the son makes it back to the wagon train. His story winds on, with a mentor, a girl his own age, breaking horses, prospecting for gold, a lawyer asking questions, reading books, counting how many men he killed, and more.
