The Iron Marshal
The Iron Marshal by Louis L'Amour
An Irish boy grows up in New York -- and has just landed in Kansas.
Tom Shanagny is thrown off a train -- while it is still traveling -- and his camp is interrupted.
We cut back to his childhood, arriving in New York City alone, and after being rescued from a fight by a man, boldly asking him if he had any friends who needed a likely lad.
He grows up on the gang/political machine side, if not a criminal himself -- though he does learn blacksmithing, and shooting, on top of fist fights -- and he ends up having to get on a train to flee a rival gang.
Once there, he finds himself in the middle of a problem. And also discovers that the property thrown after him belongs to a missing man.
It involves a blacksmith, a woman staying somewhere other than the hotel, suggesting to an angry man that he's being used to cover up a robbery, several deaths, a burro, and more.
