The first in a series, mostly set-up apparently.
Even though the emperor is five years old, they are considering candidates for empress from the Five Great Families. Four of them are that age, but our heroine is seventeen. She ends up jollying along the little girls to curb their fright and the strain from everything lasting so long.
After meeting a man who acts strangely when her instrument breaks, and playing for the emperor, she is asked to become, not the empress, but the caretaker, because his nanny fell ill.
It hints at some problems ahead for her life at court.
