Book Review: Wearing the Cape

Title: Wearing the Cape
Author: Marion G. Harmon

In all the disappointment over the bad review, I forgot the excellent book I read last weekend.

Wearing the Cape is a fun, quick read with characters that are interesting and grow throughout the novel. Almost ten years before the novel begins "The Event" created superheros out of ordinary people. There is no explanation for the event, scientists cannot explain what happened or even why some people were able to develop powers while other people can't. Even years after the event, new superheroes appear whenever a crises develops that allows someone to develop powers.

The novel opens with Hope Corrigan traveling down a Chicago freeway when a super villain decides to drop a bomb during the middle of rush hour. Hope is trapped, along with hundreds of other civilians, but in her panic to escape she manages to lift tons of debris off her and help rescue dozens of others. She doesn't realize what she has done until Atlas, a superhero with a Texas drawl, interrupts her and takes her to the Chicago superhero complex.

The story draws the reader in immediately. It is well written and filled with drama, angst, witty dialogue and everything else you'd like to read in a fantasy novel. While the heroes appear one dimensional when they are introduced in the narrative, the more Hope learns about them the more the readers learns about them. None of the characters are two dimensional. Even people who are only mentioned in conjunction with the main characters are more than two dimensional.

Harmon creates a world that is easy to fall into. I half expected to turn on the TV and see a story about a superhero saving the day. It is a very quick read, but only because it has such depth of character and plot development that you want to keep reading. My only caution is that this is the first in a series. There are twists and turns that leave the reader hanging, but the sequel Villains Inc. is already available. I haven't started it yet, but it's already on my Kindle. If you like comic book heroes the least little bit, pick up Wearing the Cape.
