The boy who ate stars: Kochka (Translated by Sarah Adams)
A delightful book about a young girl getting to know and trying to understand an autistic boy. Really sweet - Recommend!
And this is true: Emily Mackie
A WEIRD book about a boy coming to terms with some catastrophic changes in his life. Brilliantly written, big on the mind fuck, but totally worth reading.
A rare interest in corpses: Ann Granger
A sweet wee murder mystery set in Victorian London, with a female heroine. Cute.

I generally prefer to read fantasy or science fiction, but in general I'll read anything really :-)

Mmm... Me too. I'm trying to expand my YA library a little to include more non-fantasy, though.
Are you enjoying the library access you've discovered?

The best YA fantasy series though: Garth Nix - Abhorsen Trilogy, D.M. Cornish - Monster Blood Tattoo and Jonathan Stroud - Bartimaeus books.
I need to read less fantasy also, but I'm back at work now, so won't be trying my hand at anything too dense for 10 weeks. I like historical fiction also - you should read The Book Thief - Markus Zusak (totally wicked!!!)
I am enjoying the library - the central city library is abysmal and the other library that I used to frequent was too far away, but this one is right next to my supermarket and they don't charge to bring books in from other libraries either - so it works really well! :-)

I've only tried the Nix of those. I'm pretty happy with my fantasy/non-fantasy ratio, but I lend out my books to my tutoring students when they have reading assignments and they tend to dislike fantasy books. :(
I do not blame you for shying away from the dense! Any books you're looking forward to reading?
Oooh. I like your library... I've no idea how ours does on inter-library loans. Ours is the biggest in the area, so if they don't have it the other libraries never did either. (I wish they'd pair up with even bigger libraries, though...) I long for wonderful libraries like yours sounds... And such a convenient spot for the library to be too!

The Auckland library system is pretty good - so I am certainly thankful about it.
You read White Boots? I have a bunch of Children's classics that I am getting rid of at the moment because I might be moving at the end of the year - if you mail me your address, I could send you them - white boots, ballet shoes, little princess and some other oddities if you would like them for your students.

Awww, thank you for offering, but I'm afraid those'd be vetoed by their teachers and/or would be available in the school library already. :( I've had most luck with contemporary realistic YA. Their topics match the Dutch books 'my kids' do have easy access to and already enjoy reading.
I read White Boots a few days ago, actually! It was lovely!
